Everybody knows about Jalsa – the luxurious ‘palace’ that houses the influential Bachchan family. What most people might not know is that Amitabh Bachchan fondly referred to as Big B, received this property from director Ramesh Sippy as payment for the hit film Satte Pe Satta. That was 1982. Almost 35 years since the house has become one of the most iconic celebrity homes in the world.
The mansion is a huge, 10,125 sq ft, two-storied building in Juhu. Trees have been planted all around the property, not just to provide shade but also some much-needed privacy. The residence is also heavily guarded and it’s nearly impossible for anyone to enter the place without invitation or permission.
Both the interior and the exteriors are colored in neutral shades of beige and brown. The message is clear: Keep things simple, keep them classy.
The entry is spacious and full of light. The living area, too, has large French windows that allow abundant sunlight to stream into the house.
The colors used throughout the house are largely shades of brown. The woody look gives the house a luxurious tinge, a look that is reinforced in almost every corner of the house.
It’s not like the home is devoid of color altogether. However, they are reserved for the carpets and the drapes, but even those are sober natural shades. With matching furniture, the look of the bedrooms is really cozy and welcome while giving it a stately and rich appearance.
The bathrooms are especially well constructed. It looks like no expense has been spared in designing these areas. The color scheme of beige is extended here, too, but instead of the matte texture of the wood elsewhere, you find the glossy finish of smooth stone here.
The back of the home has an expansive garden that is used for relaxation by the superstars. The land value of the garden alone is in multiple crores, and the fact that the Bachchans chose not to cram it with room after room after room is proof of the importance of open spaces while building homes.
Perhaps the most featured section of Jalsa is this wall that’s decorated with dozens of photos of the veteran actor – in various moods and poses. The wall also showcases the high points of the Bachchan family. So many memories, so many smiles, so many lovely moments right there!
The interiors of the home are not exactly public knowledge, but what little is known tells us that Jalsa is that rare combination of exclusivity and grandeur, of modernity and the finer aspects of traditional homes. Just the thing you’d expect from the family that the nation has come to love and adore, and of course Big B himself!
