Eclectic Decor Ideas to Brighten Up Dreary Winter Days

As an ambiguous November makes way for the chilly December, we are truly and firmly in the realm of the winter gods. With each passing day, the world around us grows cold and colorless. But, even as the sun abandons us, there’s a solace to be found in the warmth and joy of the festive season around the corner.

If you’re the kind who likes to welcome Yuletide cheer in style, here are some decor ideas that will brighten even the drabbest of winter days.

Entrance: A Reindeer’s Song of Love

Right at the entrance of your home, place a reindeer. No, not the real thing (although, won’t that be a dream!), but a bust, a sculpture, a stuffed toy, or even a painting. It really doesn’t matter what you choose as long as you’re able to welcome your guest with the sight of a cute and cheerful reindeer.

Hallway: A Postcard from the North Pole

Install a Christmas tree in your living room and deck it up with some good decorative pieces. That’s the best way to bring in the holiday spirit into your home. At the same time, you could create a very ‘North Pole’ feel by going completely white in the decor. Have pristine white upholstery, curtains, and throws. You could also use lace liberally for that ethereal snowy effect, while mirrors and crystal/glass ornaments can be employed to give the room an ‘icy’ glint.

Living Room: Tales from a Foreign Land

Your living room is where you’re going to be spending a lot of your time during the winters, so let’s do something to spice it up. It would be lovely if you have a fireplace because nothing is as wintery and charming as a bright fire and crackling wood. But, since practicality has to be considered, get yourself the next best thing – a fancy heater that looks just like a fireplace!

Now, bring in some mahogany bookshelves and fill them with leather-bound first editions of your favorite books. Plant two plush arm-chairs on either side of your ‘fireplace’ and don’t forget the coffee table to hold your cup of hot chocolate, or glass of mulled wine, as your preference may be. An ottoman, some comfy cushions and a thick carpet later, your living room will be transformed into a haven for animated conversations and quiet contemplation.

Kitchen: A Baker’s Tryst with Destiny

All of us dream of that perfect kitchen that spreads fragrances of spices and baked goods throughout the house. Alas! Not all of us can lay claim to being a baker. But that shouldn’t stop you from stocking winter goodies in the kitchen. Pastries, pies, cakes, cookies, puffs, and quiches … go out and buy them all and display them in tempting serve ware on your kitchen counter. Let your guests be greeted by the aroma of Christmas cheer as they walk into your house!

Backyard: The Whispers of the Flames

If you have a backyard, that’s a real bonus. Decorate the area with dim yellow lights. Hang up lanterns or go old fashioned and use candles to illuminate the porch. Place some wooden chairs or just spread a thick rug on the floor and make yourself comfortable on the ground. Now, get a bonfire going, bring out your guitar, hand out glasses of mulled wine, curl up under a blanket, and pass the winter night looking at stars.

There now! Don’t these ideas brighten your mood? Imagine what they would do for your home. So, get working and create the winter paradise you’ve always dreamed of.
